Focus Group Findings By Beth Cass

To gain information about what the audience would want to see in a thriller we carried out two focus groups of different age groups to aim at different demographics and psychographics of a thriller. One group was three year 9 boys that are students at Shenfield School and another was two adults, male and female. This then balanced out the groups as one female was involved and two different age groups. Some responses to the questions that were asked in the questionnaire relate to the answers received in the focus group.

The information gathered from these suggest that overall boys and men like thrillers and woman tend to prefer other genres. Also women tend to prefer films that have a happier story line and not ones that have mentally ill people in. The answers given to us about music gave us plenty of ideas of what type of music to use to give the audience more of a thrill like scary and eery music that also builds up tension.

Also it appears that storylines that have a hidden message or a clever story line catch the audiences attention and makes them enjoy the film. This could give us inspiration to make the start clever to make the viewer want to watch the whole film by using actions that have unanswered questions.

Using mentally ill people, the question asked to the focus groups and used in the questionnaires suggests that some people dont understand what our group means as 'mentally ill' and some people may find it offensive and too disturbing to watch a film about it.
